U10 Jr. Chargers bring the “BOOM” to the Kaboom in June Tourney
It was another successful weekend for the U10 Jr. Chargers as they brought their own fireworks to the Kaboom in June Tourney lighting up the competition on their way to their first ever tournament win. It was a scorching weekend up in West Bend and the Jr. Chargers kicked off the three-day tournament splitting a pair of games between the Merton Fillies and Muskego Storm Black. Syd York got the weekend started throwing a 75-pitch no-hitter, striking out 14 of the 17 batters faced, against the Fillies as the girls cruised to an 8-0 win. In the nightcap, the Jr. Chargers hung strong but were stymied by the Storm who only allowed two hits and no runs on their way to a 0-4 loss.
Saturday pool play continued with the Jr. Chargers facing tournament host West Bend Lightning, needing a win to ensure an opportunity to play in the championship bracket. And boy did they not disappoint, as the Jr. Chargers collected seven hits on a way to a 13-1 victory over the Lightning. The Jr. Chargers were paced by a huge day at the plate by Ava Serembiczky who knocked in 3 runs collecting a triple and an in-the- park home-run in the victory. The win guaranteed the Jr. Chargers a shot in the title bracket where they met their old foes the Elkhorn Express in the semi-final matchup. This could be considered a rubber match from the previous tournament where the Jr. Chargers split their first 2 match-ups against a talented Express squad. The game did not disappoint as the Jr. Chargers took the early lead only to see the Express crawl back into it late. But with a strong pitching performance by Makenna Best and York along with timely hitting by Kaylin (KK) Stendler and York, the girls escaped with a hard-fought 6-4 win, guaranteeing a shot in the Sunday title game.
Sunday’s title game was a repeat match-up with Muskego Storm Black. And unfortunately for the Black, the Jr. Charger’s girls never waste second opportunities against opponents. The Jr. Charger girls exploded at the plate for nine runs on nine hits, including two in-the-park homeruns by Ava Serembiczky and Isabella Ott. Syd York continued her spectacular season on the bump, pitching a complete game six-hitter, as the Jr. Chargers girls brought home the hardware being crowned tournament champions of the 2021 Kaboom in June. Paced by strong weekend pitching performances, timely hitting, and spectacular play in the field, the lady Jr. Chargers saw contributions from the entire team on their way to a hard fought tournament championship. The lady Jr. Chargers will take the field again this upcoming Monday June 21st against the Falls Angel’s as they continue their WFL season.
U10 Jr. Chargers come up short in in Elkhorn
The U10 Jr. Chargers Softball team came out of the gate hot in their first action of the year, battling through two crazy days of Wisconsin weather and taking the Palatine Stingrays into extras of the championship game before falling 5-4. Paced by the strong pitching duo of Makenna Best and Sydney York along with their trusted backstop Ava Serembiczky, the Chargers were able to ride a strong day one pool play performance into a third seed for the final day of the double-elimination tournament.
On day two, the Chargers had no problems with their first matchup, easily blowing by the Kenosha Fusion as the Charger hitters banged out 9 hits with their 18 at-bats on their way to a 9-3 victory. Game two was the rubber match between the Elkhorn Express, who had dealt the Chargers a close pool play loss on day one. Unfortunately for the Express, Sydney York came out of the gate throwing straight heat and never let the Express into the game, limiting the Elkhorn team to one run on one hit as the Chargers handled the Express 7-1. Bridget Konkol heated up from the plate going 2 for 3 with 4 runs batted in to pace the lady Jr. Chargers.
In the championship game, the Chargers matched up against the Palatine Stingrays from south of the border. Palatine got out to a quick 3-1 lead, before the lady Chargers recorded 15 consecutive outs and pushed across 3 additional runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh. But the Platine Stingrays, with some aggressive base running, were able secure the victory when they pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, securing the tournament championship.
The lady Jr. Chargers should hold their heads high as they saw contributions from the entire team with amazing plays in the field and timely hitting and base running by all. Congrats lady Jr. Chargers on a well-deserved second place finish. The lady Jr. Chargers will take the field again June 6th against the Oconomowoc Five O’s to kick off the start of the WFL season.
The Jr. Chargers Softball held a successful softball clinic to start off the new year.
The Jr. Chargers Softball Club held the first softball clinic of the year on Saturday, January 2 for the U8, U10, U12, and U14 age groups.
Former Chicago Bandit, Alex Booker, visited the clubhouse to share her knowledge and love of the game with our Jr. Charger girls.
For those who may not know, the Chicago Bandits are a part of the National Pro Fastpitch League. Alex played four years at the University of Illinois and went on to play for the Chicago Bandits upon graduation, where they won the National Championship. Following her playing career, she has coached softball at all levels, from youth up to college. She continues to share that passion for the game through hosting camps for programs like ours.
The clinic was broken out into two sessions, a defense-focused session and a hitting focused session. The girls were welcomed to attend either one of the sessions or both.
The Jr. Charger Softball girls worked hard completing all the drills and had fun learning new ways to view and enjoy the game of softball. We are very pleased with the successful turn out and with a great start to the new season!
